WHY 35 YEARS OLD?

This poster design was created to honor trans lives during Trans Day of Remembrance. The poster focuses on the number 35 since that is the average life expectancy for Black trans women in the United States.

MAIN CHALLENGES

Creating the drip marks on the melting candle went through multiple rounds of adjustments, in order to create a balance between both the colors and the proximity to the candlewick.

INSPIRATION
& PROCESS

INSPIRATION

I was inspired to use candles as a way of writing the number 35 since they are often used on birthday cakes. On the other hand, often when people pass away, candles are lit in their honor. The contrast in celebrating one's life is tied together by the candle. Since the average life expectancy of Black trans women in the United States is 35 years old, the poster has two melting candles. The candle has been blown out before it has had the time to fully melt, with smoke disappearing into the dark background. The poster includes information about how to help support trans lives to work towards creating a safer and more inclusive world.

PROCESS

While I tried various layouts, I knew that I wanted the 35 to be the main focus. Broken up line by line, the body text mirrors the rising and fading smoke. The blue, pink, and white colors on the number 35 are the colors from the transgender flag.
