Created a full font family called Lavago

Linearity, Fontself

Process

It started with these simple sketches and a passion for typography. The more that I worked on the font, the more it changed and the more I realized that I had to let go of certain aspects that I had been too attached to from the beginning. At one point, I noticed that I was accidentally designing two completely different fonts at the same time, while trying to force them to work together - one felt more like a lava lamp, while the other reminded me of an old pirate ship or a delicate spider web.

So, I went back to the drawing board and asked myself which aspects I wanted to focus on. I leaned into the negative space, fluidity (more rounded), and differing weights of the original “A” that I had sketched. I revisited every other letter with this new focus.

I tested out different words to see how the letters balanced each other out, which led to many, many, MANY different iterations - I noticed that even slight changes would have large impacts. Through this process, I had to learn when to keep making changes, and when to let it be, because the process would otherwise be endless.

Final Designs

After sketching the designs on Linearity, I cleaned them up in Fontself. In Fontself, I created 218 characters for each font type (Light, Regular, and Bold). Each font type can be downloaded as an .otf file.

Lavago is a serif font and I wanted it to be fun, memorable, and versatile.
