WHAT IS TUULEE?
Tuulee is a weather-based music app that began as a class project but was further developed during the 2020 Mozilla Builders Summer Open Lab. Tuulee combines location, activity level, and weather to curate personalized song playlists. By relating technology and music to weather patterns, people can better connect with their surroundings.
MAIN CHALLENGES
Creating a successful algorithm for how different weather, activity, and locations impact music was one of the main challenges faced while developing Tuulee into a functioning app. Working with a Developer and Project Manager helped to make it a more efficient and concise application.
LOGO PROCESS
I experimented with different ways of combining music and weather, while focusing on how it feels to listen to music and experience weather. The name of the app was originally “YouCast” but was later changed to “Tuulee.” In Finnish, tuulee means “it’s windy.” When I was working on the algorithm for the app, I thought about how much wind impacts how people experience weather, and how the wind levels would then change what types of songs would be played through the app.
Later on in the process, I softened the edges on the logo and cleaned up the lines. The final logo design is presented in the Final Designs section.
Competitive Analysis
& Research
The analysis and research include user interviews, competitive analysis of YouTube, user flow map, & a value proposition.
USER FLOW MAP
App Flow Focus:
YouTube
Flow:
the app opens to the home screen with recommended videos, main function buttons, & new videos
only a few clicks to log in, switch accounts, or log out
playlists are easy to add to or remove from
clicking on a video brings up the description, related videos, & comment section
while watching a video, there are icons that provide quick access to like/dislike or share a video
VALUE PROPOSITION
Tuulee is a revolutionary app that curates music based on local weather by connecting with the weather app & activity level, in order to curate easy-to-access playlists for users.
After interviewing three individuals in their early to mid-20s about music apps (Apple Music, Spotify, & Google Play), one common problem that appeared was the difficulty of use. Adding, removing, & organizing songs in playlists take too many clicks.
I would like to focus on a younger audience, mainly 18-35-year-olds who use music apps both on the go & at home. From parties to car rides by the beach, this app will provide music that is perfect for each occasion.

Final Prototype
The app went through multiple versions after user testing, & made the most changes during the Mozilla Builders Open Lab (Summer 2020). These changes included simplifying the app by taking out unnecessary screens & features, & changing the name from YouCast to Tuulee. Tuulee maintains a minimalist style, with abstract illustrations & white space.
There were plans to launch the MVP, when Tuulee was in the coding phase. There was a tester version that worked successfully on desktop, but, as of right now, we are not planning on maintaining the desktop version or creating the app.
